İşte, BBC’ye göre en iyi 100 İngiliz romanı | Javanshir Gadimov

BBC Culture, İngiltere dışındaki kitap eleştirmenlerine yaptığı anket sonucu, en iyi 100 İngiliz romanının listesini hazırladı. Liste, İngiltere dışındaki okurlara İngiliz edebiyatı ile ilgili bir bakış açısı sunmayı amaçlıyor.İngiliz edebiyatı dışarıdan nasıl görünüyor? BBC Culture’dan Jane Ciabattari, İngiltere hariç, Avustralya’dan Zimbabve’ye kadar dünya genelinden 82 kitap eleştirmenine bir anket yaptı. Listede kurmaca dışı kitap, oyun, öykü, epik şiir ve kısa hikayeler yok. Sadece romanlar ve sadece İngiliz yazarlar (bu James Joyce yok anlamına geliyor) var.

Ciabattari, hazırladığı liste ile ilgili, “Asırlarca dünya genelini etkileyen İngiliz romanları ile ilgili küresel bir bakış açısı elde etmek ihtiyacı duyduk. Anket yaptığımız 82 eleştirmeni dünyanın farklı yerlerinde yaşayan, ABD’den Avrupa’ya, Avustralya’dan Afrika’ya, Asya’dan Orta Doğu’ya kadar geniş bir coğrafyadan seçtik.” diye yazdı.

Ankete katılan eleştirmelerin her birinden 10 İngiliz romanı seçmeleri istendi. Listenin başındaki en iyi romana 10 puan verildi. Bu puanlar hesaplanarak son liste hazırlandı. Eleştirmenler toplamda 228 romanın ismini verdi ve buradan 100 kitap listeye girdi. (1)

BBC Culture’nin listesindeki bazı kitaplar sürpriz olarak değerlendiriliyor. Listede modern romanlardan (Hanif Kureishi’nin Varoşların Bada’sı ve Ali Smith’in “There but for the”), çocuk klasikleri Narnia Günlükleri gibi çok farklı kitaplar yer alıyor.

Listede dikkat çeken başka bir özellik ise kadın yazarların geniş yer bulması. Daha önceki benzer listelerden faklı olarak özellikle ilk 10’da kadın yazarları (Virginia Woolf, Charlotte Brontë, Emily Brontë, Mary Shelley) ağırlıkta görüyoruz. Ayrıca 100 kitabın yaklaşık yüzde 40’ını kadın yazarların eserleri oluşturuyor. (2)

Listenin başında George Eliot’un Middlemarch romanı bulunuyor. Listede en çok romanı olan isimler ise Virginia Woolf ve Charles Dickens. Dickens’in ilk 10’da 3 romanını, Virginia Woolf’un ise 2 romanını görüyoruz.
